Home/Itineraries/3 days in New York City

3 days in New York City: a day-by-day itinerary

Pick two neighbourhoods a day and stop trying to do the rest.

Trip length
3 full days
Best months
April, May, June, September, October, December
Rough daily budget
Mid-range: roughly $180–280 per person per day

This is a shape, not a schedule. Each day has two anchors and a lot of slack, because 3-day itineraries that book four things a day fall apart the first time lunch runs long. Move things around freely — the neighbourhoods are grouped so that walking between stops actually works.

Day 1 — Downtown

Before you go

  • Go in Late April to June, and September to October if you have the choice
  • Skip Mid-July to August is humid and heavy; late January and February are grim without the snow-day upside
  • Subway with a tapped card — no need to buy anything in advance.
  • Book anything with timed entry as soon as your dates are fixed

Planning this with other people

New York is where budget mismatches hurt most: a $95 tasting menu and a $4 slice are both authentic experiences. Agree in advance which meals are group splurges and leave the rest optional so nobody's quietly overspending.

Common questions

How many days do you need in New York?
Four days lets you cover downtown, Midtown and one outer borough at a sane pace. Three is doable if you cut a borough.
Where should you stay in New York?
Lower East Side, East Village or Williamsburg for atmosphere and food; Midtown West for shows and transit; Long Island City for value with a fast train in.
Is a New York attractions pass worth it?
Only if you'd genuinely visit four or more of the included paid sights. Most good New York days are free, and the passes assume a landmark-heavy itinerary.
What's the cheapest way to eat well in New York?
Lunch specials, Queens, and the dollar-slice-to-$18-sandwich middle ground. The gap between a $25 meal and a $90 meal is much smaller than the price suggests.
