Home/Itineraries/3 days in Mexico City

3 days in Mexico City: a day-by-day itinerary

World-class food, walkable neighbourhoods, and prices that still feel like a mistake.

Trip length
3 full days
Best months
February, March, April, October, November, December
Rough daily budget
Mid-range: roughly $60–100 per person per day

This is a shape, not a schedule. Each day has two anchors and a lot of slack, because 3-day itineraries that book four things a day fall apart the first time lunch runs long. Move things around freely — the neighbourhoods are grouped so that walking between stops actually works.

Day 1 — Take it slow (altitude)

Before you go

  • Go in March to May, and October to November if you have the choice
  • Skip June to September is the rain season. Mornings are fine; afternoons flood
  • Uber and Didi are inexpensive and the sane default.
  • Book anything with timed entry as soon as your dates are fixed

Planning this with other people

This is one of the best group cities anywhere — big tables are normal, Xochimilco is built for a crowd, and costs are low enough that budget mismatches stop mattering. Keep a shared list of everyone's saved taquerías; you will not remember the names.

Common questions

How many days do you need in Mexico City?
Four full days covers the core neighbourhoods, one museum-heavy day and a Teotihuacán trip. Six lets you add Puebla or a slower pace.
Is Mexico City safe for tourists?
The central neighbourhoods most visitors use — Roma, Condesa, Juárez, Polanco, Coyoacán — are busy and generally fine with normal city awareness. Use apps rather than street taxis and keep phones out of sight on the metro.
Does altitude affect you in Mexico City?
Often, yes. Expect to be short of breath on stairs for a day or two. Hydrate, skip the hard hike on day one, and drink less than you would at sea level.
Is Mexico City cheap?
Very, by North American or European standards. A great taco costs under a dollar and a tasting menu at a well-regarded restaurant costs a fraction of its New York equivalent.
