Where to travel, month by month

Most destinations have one or two months where they're genuinely at their best, and a couple where they're a mistake. Start from the month you can actually take off work and pick a destination whose season fits it — it's a far better way round than picking a place and hoping.

2 destinations at their best

January

The cheapest month to fly almost anywhere, and the best month to be somewhere dry and warm while home is grim.

5 destinations at their best

February

Shoulder-season Europe at half price, aurora season in the north, and the last good month in tropical Asia before the heat.

7 destinations at their best

March

The month everything starts opening again — southern Europe warms up, North Africa is perfect, and Japan's blossom season begins.

10 destinations at their best

April

Arguably the best all-round travel month: warm enough for southern Europe, cool enough to walk all day, and before the summer prices.

11 destinations at their best

May

Long days, open terraces, warm seas in the Mediterranean, and the last month before peak pricing hits.

7 destinations at their best

June

Peak daylight. Iceland and the Nordics get near-endless light, the Rockies open up, and Europe is warm before it's unbearable.

2 destinations at their best

July

The hardest month to travel well in the northern hemisphere. Go north, go high, or go somewhere whose season this actually is.

2 destinations at their best

August

Peak everything. If you can't move your dates, pick places built for it — mountains, high latitudes, or the southern hemisphere.

10 destinations at their best

September

The travel-industry consensus best month: warm seas, thinning crowds, dropping prices, and everything still open.

11 destinations at their best

October

Autumn colour in Japan and North America, comfortable heat in North Africa and Mexico, and quiet, cheap southern Europe.

5 destinations at their best

November

Low season in most of Europe and the start of the dry season across Southeast Asia — a good month to travel far.

3 destinations at their best

December

Split into two months: a cheap, quiet first half, and an expensive, festive, fully booked second half.
