Home/Itineraries/3 days in Lisbon

3 days in Lisbon: a day-by-day itinerary

Tiled hills, cheap seafood, and the best sunset spots in Western Europe.

Trip length
3 full days
Best months
March, April, May, September, October
Rough daily budget
Mid-range: roughly €80–130 per person per day including a shared apartment

This is a shape, not a schedule. Each day has two anchors and a lot of slack, because 3-day itineraries that book four things a day fall apart the first time lunch runs long. Move things around freely — the neighbourhoods are grouped so that walking between stops actually works.

Day 1 — The old city, downhill

Start high at Miradouro da Graça with a coffee, then walk down through Alfama
Lunch at a tasca — grilled sardines, bifana, or the daily fish
Sé Cathedral and the castle walls, if anyone's still up for the climb
Sunset at Miradouro de Santa Catarina, dinner in Bairro Alto
Day 2 — Belém and the riverfront
Tram or the riverside path west to Belém
Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, then pastéis at the original bakery
Walk or taxi back via LX Factory for late lunch and the rooftop
Fado in Alfama in the evening — book a small room, not a dinner show
Day 3 — Sintra or the sea
Early train from Rossio to Sintra; Pena Palace first, Quinta da Regaleira after
Or: train to Cascais, rent bikes, ride the coast road toward Guincho
Back in the city for dinner in Príncipe Real
Late drinks at Pink Street if the group still has legs

Before you go

  • Go in March to May, and September to October if you have the choice
  • Skip July and August. It's hot, the Alfama viewpoints are shoulder to shoulder, and prices roughly double
  • Walk the centre, use the metro for longer hops, and skip Tram 28 unless you board at the very start of the line.
  • Book anything with timed entry as soon as your dates are fixed

Planning this with other people

Lisbon splits well: beach people, museum people and eat-your-way-through-it people can each take a morning and reconvene for dinner. Keep everyone's plans on one shared itinerary so the regrouping actually happens.

Common questions

How many days do you need in Lisbon?
Three full days covers the city comfortably. Add a fourth for Sintra and a fifth if you want a beach day in Cascais.
Is Lisbon expensive?
It's the cheapest capital in Western Europe by a decent margin. Expect a good sit-down dinner for €20–30 per person, and accommodation well below Barcelona or Rome.
Is Lisbon walkable?
Very — but it's hilly and cobbled. Bring shoes with grip and plan routes that go downhill after lunch.
Do you need a car in Lisbon?
No. Trains cover Sintra and Cascais, and parking in the old city is miserable. Rent one only if you're continuing to the Alentejo or Algarve.
