3 days in Bangkok: a day-by-day itinerary

The best street food on the planet, and a transport system that makes the chaos navigable.

Trip length
3 full days
Best months
January, February, November, December
Rough daily budget
Mid-range: roughly $45–80 per person per day

This is a shape, not a schedule. Each day has two anchors and a lot of slack, because 3-day itineraries that book four things a day fall apart the first time lunch runs long. Move things around freely — the neighbourhoods are grouped so that walking between stops actually works.

Day 1 — Old city and the river

Before you go

  • Go in November to February if you have the choice
  • Skip April is the hottest month of the year, and May to September is the wet season with daily downpours
  • BTS Skytrain and MRT for anything they reach, river ferries along the Chao Phraya, and Grab or Bolt for the rest.
  • Book anything with timed entry as soon as your dates are fixed

Planning this with other people

Street food is the great group equaliser — everyone orders separately for a few dollars and nobody's arguing over a shared bill. Fix one meeting point per day; phones die fast in the heat.

Common questions

How many days do you need in Bangkok?
Three full days covers the temples, one market, the river and a proper night of eating. Four or five if you want Ayutthaya or a slower pace.
Is Bangkok street food safe?
Generally yes. Eat where there's a queue and high turnover, watch food being cooked to order, and be more careful with pre-cut fruit and ice in quiet spots.
What should you wear to Bangkok temples?
Shoulders and knees covered for everyone, shoes off inside. The Grand Palace enforces it strictly and rents cover-ups at the gate.
Is Bangkok worth visiting, or just a stopover?
Worth a real stay. Treating it as a 24-hour airport transfer is why so many people come away thinking it's only traffic and temples.
