Marrakech is the shortest-haul genuinely different trip available from Europe: a walled medina you will get lost in, souks that run on negotiation, and riads that turn out to be silent courtyards behind ordinary-looking doors. It's intense for the first afternoon and then it clicks.

It's also a great base rather than a whole trip. The Atlas Mountains are an hour away, Essaouira's Atlantic breeze is three, and both are worth building in.

When to visit Marrakech

Warm days, cool evenings, and the medina walkable at midday rather than punishing.

Places to visit in Marrakech

Jemaa el-Fnaa
The main square: chaotic by day, a food market by night. Enjoy it, expect to be hustled, and agree prices before anything happens.
The souks
North of the square, and easy to lose an afternoon in. Negotiation is expected — start well below asking and stay cheerful.
Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs
The best of the city's historic interiors, and both quiet early. Zellij tilework at its most obsessive.
Jardin Majorelle and the YSL Museum
Cobalt blue gardens and a genuinely good fashion museum next door. Timed tickets; book the first slot.
Le Jardin Secret and a rooftop
The medina's antidote — walled gardens and terraces above the noise. Worth knowing two or three for escape breaks.
Imlil and the Atlas foothills
Ninety minutes out for a valley walk or a Toubkal trek. Even a day trip changes the shape of the visit.

Day 1 — Medina orientation
Check into a riad, mint tea on the roof, let the noise settle

Traditional hammam and scrub in the afternoon
Street-food dinner in the square, then a mint tea terrace
Day 3 — Out of the city
Drive to Imlil for a guided valley walk and a Berber lunch

Getting around

The medina is walking-only in practice; cars can't reach most riads, so arrange a pickup that meets you at the nearest gate. Petit taxis are cheap — insist on the meter or agree a price first. Hire a driver for Atlas and coastal days.

Planning Marrakech with a group

Riads are the group win here: a whole six-room riad with a cook and a courtyard often costs less than three hotel rooms. Book the whole property and eat at least two dinners in.

Three days is enough for the medina, the gardens and a hammam. Add two or three for the Atlas Mountains or Essaouira.
Is Marrakech safe for tourists?
Generally yes, with persistent hustling in the square and souks rather than danger. Agree prices upfront, be firm and polite, and use official guides rather than volunteers.
What should you wear in Marrakech?
Loose clothing covering shoulders and knees is comfortable and respectful, for men and women. It's also the practical choice in the heat.
Should you stay in a riad or a hotel?
A riad in the medina, for a first visit — it's the experience, and the courtyard silence makes the medina's intensity manageable.
