Banff and the Canadian Rockies travel guide: what to do, when to go, how long to stay

Banff is scenery-dense in a way photographs undersell: glacier-fed lakes in colours that look edited, a highway between Banff and Jasper that ranks among the best drives anywhere, and hiking that runs from paved lakeside strolls to serious alpine days.

The trade-off is popularity. Moraine Lake is now shuttle-only, parking fills before dawn in summer, and the accommodation in the townsite is expensive. Plan the logistics and the crowds mostly stop mattering.

Trails clear of snow by late June and the lakes reach full colour in July. Winter brings world-class skiing and frozen-lake walks.

  • Best window: Late June to mid-September for hiking; December to March for skiing
  • Quieter and cheaper: Early June and late September are quiet and beautiful, with some high trails still snowed in.
  • Worth avoiding: Late April to May and October to November — many trails and facilities are closed and the lakes are grey.

Places to visit in Banff and the Canadian Rockies

Lake Louise and the Plain of Six Glaciers
The lake is the postcard; the teahouse hike behind it is where the day gets good. Start before 7am or take the shuttle.
Moraine Lake
Shuttle or guided access only — private vehicles are banned. Book the Parks Canada shuttle the moment reservations open.
Icefields Parkway
The 230km drive to Jasper. Peyto Lake, Bow Lake, the Columbia Icefield. Allow a full day, not a transfer.
Johnston Canyon
Catwalks to waterfalls, and an ice walk in winter. Very busy midday; go at first light.
Sulphur Mountain and the Banff Upper Hot Springs
Gondola or switchback hike up, then a soak. The obvious rest-day combination.
Yoho: Emerald Lake and Takakkaw Falls
Twenty minutes over the BC border and noticeably less crowded than Banff proper.

A 3-day Banff and the Canadian Rockies itinerary

A workable shape rather than a schedule to obey — two fixed things a day, and room to change your mind.

Day 1 — Banff townsite
Arrive from Calgary, pick up the park pass at the gate
Easy walk: Bow Falls and the Fenland Trail to acclimatise
Sulphur Mountain gondola late afternoon
Hot springs soak, dinner in town
Day 2 — Lake Louise and Moraine
Pre-booked shuttle to Moraine Lake at sunrise
Connector shuttle to Lake Louise; hike to the Plain of Six Glaciers teahouse
Late lunch back at the lakeshore
Drive the Bow Valley Parkway back, watching for wildlife
Day 3 — Icefields Parkway
Early start north: Bow Lake, Peyto Lake viewpoint
Columbia Icefield and the glacier walk or skywalk
Athabasca Falls, then into Jasper for the night
Dark-sky viewing — Jasper is a designated preserve

Getting around

A rental car from Calgary is effectively required, plus a Parks Canada pass. Moraine Lake needs the shuttle; Lake Louise parking fills by 6am in July. Book shuttles the day reservations open, and fill up on fuel before the Parkway.

Planning Banff and the Canadian Rockies with a group

Splitting one vehicle and a condo in Canmore instead of a Banff hotel changes the economics completely. Assign one person to the shuttle bookings — they release on a fixed date and go in minutes.

How many days do you need in Banff?
Four days for Banff and Lake Louise; six or seven if you're driving the Icefields Parkway and staying in Jasper too.
Can you drive to Moraine Lake?
No. Private vehicles are no longer permitted — access is by Parks Canada shuttle, commercial bus or guided tour, all of which need booking ahead.
When are the Banff lakes their brightest blue?
Mid-July through August, once glacial melt is fully feeding them. In June they're still partly thawing; by October the colour has faded.
Where should you stay near Banff?
Canmore is cheaper and 20 minutes out, Banff townsite is convenient and pricey, Lake Louise village saves the early-morning drive.
