Bali travel guide: what to do, when to go, how long to stay

Bali gets flattened into a single image, but Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu and the east are barely the same holiday. Surf-and-cafés, rice-terrace-and-temples, clifftop-and-sunset, and quiet-volcano-village all exist here, and picking the wrong base is the most common way to have a mediocre time.

Split your stay across two areas rather than day-tripping everywhere from one. Traffic between the south and Ubud is bad and getting worse, and an hour on a map often means two and a half in reality.

When to visit Bali

Dry season without the July–August peak. Consistent surf, open roads, and prices below high season.

Places to visit in Bali

Ubud and the Sidemen valley
Rice terraces, temples and the interior. Sidemen is what Ubud was twenty years ago if you want quiet.
Uluwatu and the Bukit
Clifftop temples, serious surf, and the sunset bars. Best base for a group that wants beaches and nightlife.
Canggu
Cafés, co-working, beach clubs, motorbikes everywhere. Fun if that's your thing, exhausting if it isn't.
Nusa Penida
A fast boat from Sanur to cliffs and Kelingking beach. Do it as an overnight — the day trip is a punishing amount of van time.
Mount Batur or Sidemen rice walks
The sunrise Batur trek is popular and crowded; a guided walk through Sidemen's terraces is quieter and just as good.
Amed and the east
Black-sand diving, the Liberty wreck, and almost no crowds. Where to go if you want the island to feel calm.

A 3-day Bali itinerary

A workable shape rather than a schedule to obey — two fixed things a day, and room to change your mind.

Days 1–4 — Ubud and the interior
Arrival, transfer to Ubud, easy first evening
Rice-terrace walk at Campuhan or out in Sidemen
Tirta Empul or Goa Gajah in the morning, market and warungs after
Optional Batur sunrise trek or a waterfall day at Tibumana and Kanto Lampo
Days 5–8 — South coast
Transfer to Uluwatu or Canggu
Surf lesson or beach day; sunset at Uluwatu temple with the kecak dance
Overnight to Nusa Penida for Kelingking and Diamond Beach
Beach club day and a proper group dinner in Seminyak
Optional days 9–12 — Slow down
Amed for diving and a genuinely quiet few days
Or Sidemen for hiking and views of Agung
Or the Gili Islands by fast boat for no traffic at all

Getting around

Grab and Gojek work in most areas but are restricted near some beaches and markets. For anything beyond your neighbourhood, hire a driver by the day — it's cheap and much less stressful than a scooter you're not confident on.

Planning Bali with a group

Villas with a pool are the reason groups love Bali: splitting a four-bedroom villa costs less per head than hostels elsewhere. Decide the villa-versus-mobility trade-off early, because the nicest villas are the furthest from everything.

How many days do you need in Bali?
Ten days is the comfortable minimum for two bases plus an island trip. A week works if you pick one region and stay put.
What's the best area to stay in Bali?
Ubud for culture and green, Uluwatu for cliffs and surf, Canggu for cafés and nightlife, Sanur or Amed for quiet. Most good trips use two.
Is Bali cheap?
Food, drivers and massages are very cheap; villas, beach clubs and Western restaurants are not. It scales to almost any budget.
When is the rainy season in Bali?
Roughly November to March, peaking in January and February. Rain usually comes as heavy afternoon showers rather than all-day drizzle.
